EMPOWERMENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
FROM THE DESK OF REV. JOAN KREMPEL
Man was made in the image of God. Then God took on the form of man, lived as a man and died as a man, in order to save man who was made in the image of God.
What does this mean - made in his image? It means we have two arms and two hands like God who formed Adam and Eve with his own hands and upholds us with his strong right arm.
It means we have two feet like God who uses the earth for his footstool.
It means we have legs and a backside like God who sits on the circle of the earth, and who showed His backside to Moses on Mt. Sinai.
It means we have two eyes to see, two ears to hear, a mind to reason with, a free will, a heart filled with emotions and a mouth to speak out of, just like God. It means we are a triune being, having a spirit, soul and body. God is the First Person of the Heavenly trinity. He is a spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. So when we were created, God put within us an immortal spirit. And when we use our created physical members, we are operating in the likeness of God for our physical body is made in the image of our spirit that is made in the image of God.
Angels were created to serve him in a spiritual Heaven. These are glorified spirits that can take the form of physical beings when they walk among men. Man was created to have fellowship with God both in Heaven, with our spirits, and in the physical earth, while in our bodies. We were given physical bodies to house our spirits so we might function in a physical world and have dominion over the earth that he created for us. There is one more thing.
God is a faith God. To know him, to worship him, to have fellowship with him requires our faith IN God. We must believe that God exists and is a real and sovereign creator. We must believe in the crucifixion, burial, resurrection and ascension of his Son, Jesus Christ, and that it was all for us, to cleanse us and redeem us from every sin and to reconcile us to God for all eternity.
We must be born again and regenerated in our spirit by the redemptive work of the Holy Spirit who takes of the things of Christ and shows them unto us. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity who circumcises and changes our heart and records our name in the Lamb's Book of Life. Only through the work of the Holy Spirit can we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of the Father. We confess with our mouth that we are accepted in the Beloved for our testimony of assurance is the springboard of our faith walk with Him. But this is only the beginning of our journey - a journey that will take us from realm to realm and glory to glory, as we grow daily.
To walk with him, to trust him, to be willing to go the distance with him, we must have the faith OF God. He is a God of power and all power belongs to Him. An un-regenerated man has a measure of it, the regenerated man has access to all of it, though not all at one time. I say we have access - as it is needed - yet an adequate measure is given to us from the moment of our birth. If we are faithful in the little things we can be trusted with the bigger things. What is this power? Even in the unregenerate?
Proverbs 18:21 " Life and death are in the power of the tongue and those who live by it shall eat the fruits thereof." The measure of the gift of God's power to all is in the tongue. Made in his image, we have power to speak faith as he spoke the worlds into existence. Everyone has it.
We ask why the unregenerate succeed and are rich and have good things while the child of God often suffers lack. Well, there are principle applications in the laws of God and when adhered to, even an unbeliever can benefit from a general application. Nonbelievers and even those that oppose God often prosper abundantly because of the faith with which they speak their prosperity and successes into being. They never use the words "can't," “impossible,” or "if" and they do not entertain doubt and unbelief in what they are doing. They persevere, they work hard and they separate themselves from anyone who does not share their vision. They stop at nothing to accomplish what they set out to do. Many Christians, on the other hand have the mindset that they are sinning if they seek after the things of the world. God has nothing against wealth. Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, Mary and Martha were all wealthy. It isn't money or success that God is opposes, it is the love of it, the pride of it that blinds our eyes and our hearts so that we cannot see God in the midst of it.
So if faith is the power behind the words, what is faith? "Faith is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of things not seen." Faith is the substance of our desire and substance can be liquid or solid. Since no one wants to be credited with having a liquid faith, we are going to deal with the solid substance of faith. You have heard of solid faith, haven't you? If the substance is solid, it's chewable. If it is chewable, it can be tasted. If we desire it, taste it, and chew on it, then the evidence becomes tangible because it now exists within you. You have chewed and swallowed the tasty juices and now it can be registered and recognized by your spirit.
Does the power of faith rule the tongue or does the power of the tongue rule our faith? Both require action. I know this is tricky but bear with me. Hear this! The tongue is slippery - fickle - if left to it's own devices the tongue can bless and curse out of the same breath while your lips are smiling. Faith is also slippery - solid one moment, liquid the next. So neither can operate alone and apparently not too well together since both want to control. Who then - or what then has the authority to measure and mete out the power of faith and the power of the tongue? Luke 6:45 "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."
The contents downloaded into the heart controls the power of faith and the power of the tongue. "Out of the ABUNDANCE of the heart the mouth speaks." It is that solid substance that is in the heart that is in control of your tongue and your faith. So, if our heart controls our tongue, and our words demonstrate our faith, how do we increase the abundance of faith that is in the heart? Are you ready? I love this - The mind controls the heart! What goes into the mind drops down into the heart and the spirit. How do things get into the mind? What we read with our eyes and what we hear with our ears - "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."
From the eyes and ears into the mind, down into the heart and spirit, then back up onto the tongue and out the mouth to produce "living" words, for every word we speak lives forever. We are forewarned that we shall be held accountable for every idle word we speak. It only takes a grain of faith to believe IN Christ unto salvation. It takes much more to have the faith OF God unto signs, miracles and wonders.
Jesus told us to "have the faith OF God", the kind of faith that moves mountains and raises the dead. The faith OF God comes from God through the Holy Spirit and returns through our words TO God to give Him Glory. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him. And faith cometh by hearing and studying the Word of God, through prayer, obedience and absolute trust in Him and His Word. Without faith there can be no mutual trust, without mutual trust, there can be no greater works.
Now hear this! We demonstrate more faith in our casual conversations than we do in our declarations of faith. We say, "I am going to market to buy the groceries. I will be back shortly." We believe without a doubt that is what we are going to do and we do it. We say, " I don't feel good, and I feel a headache coming on." In the faith that we are going to have a headache, we run for the aspirin. "I just KNOW I'm supposed to go to that meeting." "I just KNOW this is of God." " I just KNOW I’ve passed that test."
But lay hands on someone who is sick and pray for healing and what happens? See someone afflicted and what do we do? Watch while an alcoholic plasters himself and what do we do - we complain - we coax and plead and just KNOW there is going to be a scene. What we should do is rebuke that thing and tie it up so it can't speak or exercise any control. What we should do is cast out that sickness, that affliction, or that spirit of death.
What happens to our faith at these times? Why are we so intimidated when we are in a position of needing to demonstrate faith? I'll tell you why. Faith for ordinary words come easy - we are programmed to believe our own words and in faith we speak them... But faith to move mountains, or raise the sick requires us to be accountable to the sick as well as to God. And we end up raising our pride to life instead of the sick.
We look at their faces and think, "Oh, what if this doesn't work?" Have no fear - it won't! Faith in our failure is stronger than our faith in God. This is why pride is the Goliath we must kill. We must slay the giant and cut off his head - but first we need deliverance from fear so we can loudly proclaim, "You come against me with sword and arrows but I come against you in the Name of the Most High God of Israel." By now we have gathered our little stones and slingshot - these represent the authority Jesus has given us, through which we will sling the stones that are God's Word and bring the enemy down.
Just as there is a difference between our faith IN God and our faith OF God, so there is a difference in our faith IN His Word and our faith OF His Word. The written Word of God itself has power for it is the SPOKEN Word of the Almighty that was spoken in faith and in power. Whatever God speaks comes to pass because of the faith with which they are spoken. And because we are created in His image, we too release power through the words we speak. So whether we speak His Word out of our mouths, or speak our own words, if they are spoken with the faith OF God and faith IN the Word, things happen.
Believers should always follow the unction and instructions of the Holy Spirit to the letter - no more and no less. Then give HIM the glory. Never accept praise for yourself that others may be tempted to give. It is Divine power, activated by the principle of faith, that performs the word we speak. And the principle of God’s law of faith works for the unbeliever as well as the believer. We are all conduits through which Divine power, activated by faith, flows. Believers should recognize that this principle and power exists so they can more effectively monitor the words they speak.
There is no such thing as words falling on deaf ears. They enter the atmosphere and, depending on the context of the words, they can put the angels to work for you (faith words) or they can give Satan permission to come against you (negative words). We are often our own worst enemy. Satan has so damaged our vocabulary with slang we speak words we have heard all our lives and thing nothing of it. For example, we say, “I was scared to death.” “I’m tickled to death.” “ I thought I would just die.” “Oh, I wanted to die.” Do you hear yourself speaking death here? Do you realize you are speaking death on yourself?
Why this obsession with speaking death in our conversations? Because we don’t know any better than to speak such curses against ourselves and because we have not been taught that our words have power. Death may not be in our heart, we don’t really mean the words, but we speak them because that is the way we hear the world speak. We need to start talking the way God talks. Of course, we won’t hear anyone else say, “I was tickled to life” or “I was scared to life” but we can speak that way if we want to. It would make a powerful weapon against that old serpent that wants to trap us with our own tongues…
Since empowerment requires the faith OF God we need to be on our toes at all times. A giant faith can easily be vanquished by the smallest seed of doubt and even by distraction. When moved to do a specific work, clear the room. Jesus said "Worship God" and "I desire mercy and not sacrifice." Let your prayers be unto God and not unto man, for without faith and compassion there can be no greater works. Without compassion there can be no faith, without faith you will only produce wood, stubble and hay. When you speak boldly, with authority and in total faith, the Holy Spirit will perform your words.
Do not allow distraction - this is why you must clear the room. This is not a performance to show others your faith. We demonstrate our faith and our action unto God. If we are more concerned about what others think of us, we will fail. Distraction can break the anointing for it causes us to lose our focus. Stay focused and let the Spirit speak through you. If you have cleared the room, no one can stop the flow of God’s mercy except you, so the burden then rests on you and your faith to believe God.
Remember, you are not only living in Christ but Christ is also living in you. Diminish self. Let Him be the life force, for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ and the Spirit of prophecy is the Spirit of Christ, and your words are prophetically empowered to go forth and accomplish that to which they are sent. ALL words are prophetic. Every word we speak is prophetic. Think about it! We prophesy every time we open our mouth. We prophesy good things and bad and do not know we are doing so for most of us do not realize the power in our tongue. Therefore our tongue should speak faith-filled words, and our actions should be in accordance with His instruction. When faith connects with the power of the tongue, and the power of the tongue connects with the power of the Holy Ghost and God's infallible Word, someone is going to be resurrected.
Stay in an attitude of prayer. Keep your mind stayed on the Lord, and let your mind rehearse His Word over and over and over and whenever possible, speak them aloud over and over and over until your heart is filled with abundance of faith and your mouth is ready to receive that abundance every time you open it. "For by thy words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned." (Matt: 12:37)
John 15:7 – “If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask WHATSOEVER you will, and it shall be given to you."
Matt: 18-18 – We have received the power of binding and loosing - one of the keys to the kingdom.
Matt: 21:21-22 - "...and in all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING, ye shall receive."
John 11:40 - "If thou BELIEVEST, thou shall see the glory of God."
John 16: 23 - "And in that day you shall ask me nothing, what ye ask the Father in my name, HE will give it to thee."
John 15:16 - "I have chosen and ordained you. Whatsoever ye ask the Father in my name shall be given you. "
John 14: 12-14 - "HE THAT BELIEVETH…IF YOU ASK ANYTHING IN MY NAME, I WILL DO IT."
John 1:12 - "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." When you become a son or daughter of God, you receive power to act with authority, but it requires faith to believe on his name and receive him.
Remember, the power we draw on is not our own, it is God’s. But He is anxious to use us as the conduits of that power to help others as we fulfill the instructions in the Great Commission. Remember! Small talkers do not make powerful decisions. They make big decisions, but not powerful ones. Small minds do not know they are accountable and resent being told that they are. Pride is the giant Goliath that threatens us all. All greed, lust for power, selfishness, gossip, corporate or ministerial ladder climbing is the product of pride. False humility is pride. Any concern over what others think of you is pride. Pleasing men instead of God is pride. Leaning on works instead of Christ is pride.
Faith without works is dead. Works without faith is wood, stubble and hay.
The church is not doing her job. She has not done her job since the days of the early church. Turn in your Bibles to the book of Acts and read it - all of it. The Book of Acts is the establishment of the church and the church is still in the book of Acts. We will stay there until Jesus comes. You will find in the Book of Acts that signs, miracles and wonders were accomplished before and after preaching and even without preaching. The Holy Ghost that fell at Pentecost had HIS way in the early church and thousands were added to the church daily.
We need the power of the Holy Ghost today. When we are saved, we become indwelled by the Holy Ghost. He is a quickening presence, a real, living, joyous person who comes to live within us and to place a redemptive seal in us. And, Jesus said He would never leave us nor forsake us. He becomes our teacher, our comforter, our guide, our companion and our best friend, if we let Him. He speaks to us and He speaks through us, if we listen and if we let Him. But then we must proceed to the baptism of fire, which is the baptism they received at Pentecost.
When Jesus visited the Disciples in the Upper Room following his resurrection, he breathed on them and said, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 20:22). And, they were filled with the Holy Ghost. Then in Acts 1:4-5 we read, “And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father, which,” said he, “you have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.” Pentecost brought the tongues of fire to the waiting 120 faithful ten days after the ascension of Jesus Christ.
There is joy and assurance in our salvation when the Holy Ghost comes in to dwell, but there is fire in the baptism of the Holy Ghost. This is the enduement of power from the Throne of Power. It comes from on high, from the spiritual fires that surround God’s Throne and it gives us power to believe and step out in what we believe. It strips away all fear and all shyness and we find that we are like Peter, bold and without restraint. It takes Holy Ghost fire power to operate in the God kind of faith and the Holy Ghost is the only one who can give it.
In Acts 1:8 we read more instructions by Jesus: “But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
We too can receive this baptism that is a baptism of fire “upon” us, whereas the indwelling Spirit is “within.” But we must ask for it. It does not come automatically. It must be desired before it can be received. Just be sure when you ask for it that you are not worshipping the gift more than the giver. Recognize that the giver of the gift is to be desired as more precious than the gift, for the gift is not given to feed your pride. It is given only to the humble and the totally surrendered.
If we have this power so available to us, then, why have we seen the diminishing of faith? Are you sure you want to know? Are you sure you want the responsibility of knowing? Remember that more understanding brings more responsibility, nevertheless, only in the knowing can you regain the ground you have lost, and climb higher again and even higher than before. Only in the knowing can you repent and move into the greater works that the Holy Ghost has planned for you to do. Are you ready? Okay - here it is...
Too many Christians have submitted to men instead of to Christ. They chase around from this place to that place, to this teacher and that teacher, this evangelist and that evangelist, this church and that church, always searching but never coming to the full knowledge and understanding of who we are in Christ Jesus. It is good to want to grow in knowledge and understanding but these can only come through personal study and meditation on the Word, and in your quiet time with Him.
Teachers are good - Evangelists are good - Prophets are good - we want to hear them all, but we have tended to lean on them, to follow after them, and too many have put them on a pedestal. We must remember that God is a jealous God. Christ is our head, the apostles are the feet, the foundation, and we are to grow between the feet and the head "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."
Before He ascended to the Father, Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit and that He would teach us all things that we need to know, that He would take of the things of Him (Christ) and show them unto us. While we need the help of teachers, scholars and leaders in order to grow, we must give our worship to the Lord and not to men. Too many Pastors have kept their people in bondage and refused to let them use the gifts of their callings. Some feel threatened, many don’t even believe in the gifts, others are jealous, and a few just want to control when in fact, THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH.
The Holy Spirit is the Vicar (Representative) of Christ on this earth and He is worthy of our recognition as such. Pastors need to submit to Him and stop trying to run the show. I hate to put it in that context but we do have a lot of dog and pony shows today that have nothing to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the moving of the Holy Spirit. If their purpose is to attract more people to the church, perhaps they should try preaching the truth, in power and boldness, without compromise, and give the reins back to the Holy Ghost. I guarantee you, if they would do this, the pews would be filled and signs and wonders would follow…
Many mainline denominations do not recognize the power and some denominations even deny there is any power. They deny the gifts and they deny the order of authority as set in the Church by God. A large majority of mainline denominations do not even believe in apostles and prophets for today. But Corinthians 12:28 clearly states and cannot be ignored:
“And GOD has set some in the Church, first Apostles, secondarily Prophets, thirdly Teachers, after that Miracles, then Gifts of Healings, Helps, Governments, Diversities of Tongues.”
Now, if GOD set them in the Church, why do our churches deny them, why do they reject them, why do they insist that these appointments are not for today’s Church? The scriptures tell us that there is no shadow of turning with God, He does not change. If this was the order He set for the Church in the beginning, then they were set for the duration of the Church, the entire age of Grace, until Jesus comes. Men who overwrite God’s times and laws and change them will have to come up with a very good reason for doing so for there is no earthly reason that suffices for tearing down the power and order set by God for the Church.
Without Spirit there is no Fire, and without Fire there is no conviction and without conviction there is only lukewarm legalism. Without Spirit and Fire there can be no miracles, no healings, no deliverances from afflictions. Such churches as these are wells without water, white washed tombs and dry bones…
Those who do have the Spirit and the Fire operating in the Church are doing a terrific work for they are operating in submission to the authority of the Holy Spirit. Healings and deliverances are seen in these churches as they were in the early church, and the fellowship of the Spirit is sweet, joyous, and moving…like gentle waters, like a very soft breeze, like fresh air and warm sun and it satisfies the hungry and thirsty soul…
Any child of God can have the baptism of the Holy Ghost. It won’t fall in the form of flaming tongues as it did in the upper room, but, according to your faith and your desire for it, it will fall. One must be saved and one must be clean of heart, soul and mind. All one has to do is prayerfully ask…continue praying, and let the Holy Ghost have His way. If you feel the Spirit of the Lord coming upon you and you begin to pray in a different language, do not stop praying, it will be a known language of the world.
There is no such thing as an unknown tongue. Paul spoke of speaking in the tongues of men and of angels. Just let your praying be unto God for the Holy Ghost is praying through you and He is probably praising the Lord. Then learn to listen and obey the Spirit within you and let God bless your labors unto Him as you give Him all the Glory for all things. Remember, He and He alone is worthy to be praised. Be blessed and may all that you set your hands to do, and your tongue to speak, prosper you and the Kingdom of God till Jesus comes…
